Ongoing Gay Marriage Saga in the Methodist Church

The Methodist Church in Liberia is embroiled in a controversial saga involving alleged plans for a gay marriage ceremony, which church members have vehemently opposed. According to reports circulating on social media and other media outlets, the church was purported to be planning to conduct a gay marriage ceremony, but these claims have been debunked by an inside source.

There was no ongoing gay marriage at the Methodist Church in New Georgia as reported earlier. According to the source, Bishop Samuel J. Quire intended to turnover new leadership to the congregation after dismissing the current pastor who spoke against gay marriage last Sunday. The Bishop’s action was counter-reacted by church members. However, as per the United Methodist Book of Discipline, the Bishop is to call for sessions and report to members in Liberia on discussions at the General Conference in the United States of America.

Unfortunately, since Bishop Samuel returned in May 2024, he has allegedly refused to call for sessions but instead, in the constant act of dismissing church leaders who speak against gay marriage/homosexuality. His actions have sparked concerns amongst the congregation, leading them to stand against his appearance in any of their churches.
The Methodist Church in Liberia, like many religious institutions, holds traditional views on marriage and sexuality, which are often at odds with more liberal interpretations. This has led to a significant divide within the church, with some members supporting the traditional stance while others advocate for a more inclusive approach.
The situation has not only caused a stir within the church but has also drawn attention from the wider community. Activists and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights have called for the church to adopt a more inclusive stance, while conservative groups have expressed their support for the church’s traditional views.
As the saga continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Methodist Church in Liberia will navigate this complex and sensitive issue. One thing is certain, however – the debate over gay marriage and sexuality within the church will continue to be a hot topic in the days and weeks to come.
